Be Social, Be Secure

Identity theft is not a joke. There’s no denying that social media has become an important part of a marketing strategy. No other channel goes further in creating real relationships with your customers, and a community around your brand. But when you’re active online, you could be at risk of exposing yourself to a range of security risks from phishing attacks to stolen passwords. According to Gitnux, 1.4 billion accounts are hacked monthly on social media platforms. Here are five tips for protecting your personal information on social media.

Enable MFA Whenever Possible: Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is a security measure that helps prevent unauthorized access to accounts since it requires one or more forms of authentication. Almost all social media platforms support MFA including Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn, to name a few.

Learn How To Spot Phishing Attempts: Learning to recognize the red flags of phishing attempts, such as suspicious sender addresses, typos, and unexpected attachments or links, is crucial to keeping yourself safe. Some phishing attempt indicators include the following:

  • Urgent language

  • Fake Meta warnings

  • Too-good-to-be-true offers

  • Sudden requests for personal information

Keep Your Apps and Devices Up to Date: Regularly updating your social media apps, as well as your devices’ operating systems and software, is crucial for security.

Secure Your Login Info: Here’s a list of techniques that you can use to create a password that’ll be nearly impossible to crack.

  • It must be at least 12 characters long

  • It should contain random combinations of lower and uppercase punctuations, symbols, numbers, and letters.

  • It mustn’t have any relation to your business, such as zip code, location, name, etc.

  • Make a habit of changing your passwords after three months

Report Suspicious Activity: Reporting promptly can help prevent the activity from escalating and prevent anyone from falling victim to it.
